Training for Volunteer Mediators
|
|
The Nashua Mediation Program conducts training programs for individuals interested in becoming volunteer mediators. The program is scheduled over a six-week period and requires a time commitment of approximately 40 hours. Those who successfully complete the training are then matched with experienced mediators for a 20-hour internship.
Mediation training focuses on understanding individual differences, the communication process, family dynamics, listening techniques, knowledge of community resources, and conflict resolution and negotiation styles as well as the process of mediation. Those involved will develop skills that prepare them to work with families, couples and other parties experiencing conflict and related communication and decision-making difficulties. Training uses a combination of information and instruction components along with experiential learning exercises.
In recent years, mediation training has been offered during the fall on alternate years. The next training program is planned for the fall of 2003, with applications and interviews taking place from June through August. Individuals interested in training are welcome to contact the program at any time.
Openings are available on a space available basis for those interested in acquiring mediation skills but unable to make the commitment to volunteer. In this case, there will be a fee for training and materials.
Other Training Options
Persons interested in mediation training may wish to investigate training opportunities with other community mediation programs. The NH Conflict Resolution Association is also a resource for information on training and conferences. Some local colleges offer courses on conflict resolution. A few offer certificate programs or degree concentrations in conflict resolution or alternative dispute resolution.
